Sugarcane of Genetic Engineering Product Jember University is interested by International

Sugarcane Genetic Engineering (PRG), which was developed by the Center for Development of Advanced Science and Technology (CDAST) Jember University started to pull attention of many people, not only within the country but also abroad. It is proved by visit Tomoyuki Endo from Department of Inorganic Chemical Mitsubishi Corporation, Japan and Chong Wai Thong, Representative in Indonesia for United Molasses (UM) Trading, England.

Visits UM representatives of Mitsubishi Corporation and Trading at Jember University was received directly by the Rector of the University of Jember, Drs. Moh. Hasan, MSc., Accompanied by Chairman CDAST Prof. Dr. Bambang Sugiharto, Ph.D (10/7). In the meeting held at Rector Building, both explaining that purpose of visits want to know more about drought-tolerant sugarcane PRG development of results CDAST Jember University.

According to Prof. Dr. Bambang Sugiharto, as company that is imported molasses from Indonesia, both companies are interested to know more about the results of development of sugarcane PRG N11-4T CDAST Jember University. Mitsubishi Corporation and MW Trading get supply of molasses, one of which comes from PTPN XI which started using sugarcane PRG N11-4T. "Mitsubishi Corporation has subsidiaries that produce yeast for bread and animal feed producers, they are interested to imported sugarcane molasses PRG N11-4T, therefore, to explore, and want to ensure safety from N11-4T molasses results are in accordance with the standards of the Japanese Government. While UM Trading is company that markets molasses for another company, "said Chairman CDAST.

In the occasion, Prof. Dr. Bambang Sugiharto explained the process of genetic engineering is carried out so as to produce variants of sugarcane PRG N11-4T that is planted by PTPN XI. "Sugarcane PRG N11-4T is certified security environment from Ministry of Environment, food safety certification from BP POM and feed safety certification from the Ministry of Agriculture. So it has been through a long process before it is declared safe, "explained Prof. Dr. Bambang Sugiharto. In this opportunity, Prof. Dr. Bambang Sugiharto also explained that there are companies from Brazil who expressed interest in the sugarcane PRG N11-4T, has even come to PTPN XI to take a close look sugarcane PRG N11-4T.

After this clarification, UM representatives expressed interest in trading for imported sugarcane molasses PRG N11-4T results, as well as colleagues from Japanese. However stand on the rules regarding genetically modified products in force in Japanese, every genetically modified products shall be socialized prior to the consumer before being released to the market. "We have to socialize to Japanese public if the molasses from sugar cane products is the result of genetic engineering and then wait for a response from Japanese public. If people can accept, then we will import molasses products of genetic engineering, "said Tomoyuki Endo.

Meanwhile, rector of University of Jember,Drs. Moh. Hasan, MSc., PhD welcomes the positive response from international world as shown by Mitsubishi Corporation and UM Trading. According, the positive appreciation from the international community into a recognition of the Kampus Tegalboto academics in the field of biotechnology, especially genetic engineering products. "I hope sugarcane PRG products N11-4T acceptable in Japan is known to have a high standard for the products of genetic engineering," said the rector.
