The farming industry is growing and trying to catch up as technology has changed the world. With automated farm machinery and equipment as well as IoT sensors that can measure soil moisture is a part of the technology. And let’s not forget about the usages of drones that can be used to collect data and track the crops have completely transformed the sector.

More people believe that digital farm is somewhat more sustainable and efficient, especially when compared to the traditional one. The idea of self-driving tractors, precision agriculture for the crops, and harvest that can be determined is nice and fun.

  • Purdue University (West Lafayette) has ACRE (Agronomy Center for Research and Education) that continuously assessing and finding better systems to farm in order to improve efficiency and increase yields. They implement sensors to collect 1.4 petabytes of data on a daily basis. 

Those are just some examples of the innovation that has been going on in the agriculture sector. It is predicted that the world would be populated by 9 billion people by 2050, so it is super crucial and essential to find smarter and better way to grow food.

Sensors have been widely used in the agricultural sector and these sensors have helped scientists to understand many elements better. Big data is related to collecting data, visualizing, analyzing, modeling, and such things alike. Through the sensors, much information can be collected, and it leads to a more precise way to manage the farms.

Scientists have tried to develop automation machines but right now, they depend on manned vehicle to collect the data. The man responsible for driving the vehicle will be holding the device with internet connection so the device can collect data and then send it to the processing resources. This alone has been more effective than the traditional farming system. Imagine how effective and effortless it will be when everything can be integrated with wireless system and automatic technologies. No more traditional work that is longer, costlier, and more ineffective.

The Challenges

Not everyone understands the role of technology and how it can efficiently be a positive game changer. Precision agriculture is the future and the next Industry 4.0 in Agriculture focus, but not everyone is able to accept such a thing. Most traditional people don’t like the new technology because the new system is different from the one they have already known, understood, and practiced. Not to mention that most farmers think that the new technology is costlier, but it can actually save them up to $20 per acre on a long term. Imagine how much money can be saved when a single farmer has to manage thousands of acres.
